Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa Expands Astrotourism Programming as Light Pollution Reduces Visibility of the Night Sky Across Much of the World
BRETTON WOODS, N.H. — Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa | Bretton Woods rolls out a new season of astrotourism experiences built around one simple idea: most people no longer know what a truly dark night sky looks like.
An estimated 80 to 90 percent of the world’s population now lives under skies too bright to see the Milky Way. In Northern New Hampshire, it’s different. The White Mountains sit in what astronomers classify as roughly Bortle Class 2 to 3 skies, where the Milky Way is still visible on clear nights, and skyglow from distant cities like Boston and Montreal appears only as a faint glow low on the horizon.
From mountaintop dinners under a rising full moon, to conversations about black holes inside a historic speakeasy, to guided astronomy sessions in one of New England’s darker sky regions, the resort’s summer programming is built around getting people to slow down and look up again.
Astrophysicist Douglas Arion, PhD, leads the programming across the season, bringing science, storytelling, and telescope viewing to everyone from lifelong astronomy enthusiasts to guests simply curious enough to look up.

Full Moon Dinner Series | Rosebrook Lodge
Guests ride the Skyway Gondola up to Rosebrook Lodge as the sun sets and the full moon rises over the Presidential Range.
At the summit: seasonal dining, wide-open mountain views, and evenings with Dr. Douglas Arion sharing insights into the moon, space exploration, and what guests are actually seeing when they look up. Weather permitting, telescopes will be set up to view the night sky.
“You are actually collecting energy from the universe when you are looking through an eyepiece, and that is an important experience,” says Arion.
It’s part dinner, part night-sky experience, and a reminder of how different the mountains feel after dark.

Mountains of Stars Lecture Series | Conservatory, Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa
Inside the historic Conservatory, Mountains of Stars brings guests face-to-face with the universe.
These sessions explore everything from the origins of the universe to black holes and current missions back to the moon and beyond. Arion blends science with visual storytelling in a way that feels accessible whether you arrive knowing the constellations or not.
“When you can experience all of nature from the ground all the way up, it gives you a sense of the connectedness of everything,” says Arion.
Weather permitting, each session includes telescope viewing and guided night-sky observation on the Veranda following the presentation.
